At the beginning, Prime Minister Hatoyama stated that it was his honor to welcome President Napolitano as his first foreign guest at the Prime Minister's Office, to which President Napolitano congratulated Prime Minister Hatoyama for assuming the post of Prime Minister.
During the meeting, President Napolitano explained Italy's initiatives in Afghanistan. Prime Minister Hatoyama expressed Japan's intention to provide assistance to Afghanistan for its economic and social stability, including agricultural assistance.
Prime Minister Hatoyama also stated that he intended to strengthen not only Japan-Italy relations but Japan-EU relations as well. In response, President Napolitano said that international endeavors for community building would require patience and effort.
